“There are unknown unknowns — the ones we don’t know we don’t know”Donald Rumsfeld

In 2022, I have a goal of becoming aware of my unknown unknowns through unplanned fortunate discoveries (serendipity).

First, let’s understand the 4 categories of knowledge:

  • Known knowns — what you know you know 🤓
  • Known unknowns — what you know you don’t know 🤔
  • Unknown knowns — what you don’t know you know 🧐
  • Unknown unknowns — what you don’t know you don’t know 🤯

The last 2 are the interesting ones we often neglect, and this lack of awareness is costing us knowledge and opportunities that could completely change our lives.

The only way to become aware of your unknown knowns and unknown unknowns is to get lucky! 🤞

And I want to show you how you can create more luck through random explorations and chance encounters with people outside your comfort zone.

Tip #1: Leverage the internet to go beyond the people you typically interact with 🌎

We tend to be stuck in our calendars with all meetings with typical people. But we need to interact with a diverse set of people to create luck.

This increases your chances of meeting people who can show you both your knowns and unknowns you’re unaware of.

Let’s say you’re describing your work to someone in a different industry and they are confused by certain words or phrases you use. This is your aha moment! You just discovered what you didn’t know that you know! When the opposite of this happens and you’re the listener then you come across what you don’t know that you don’t know.

You can use services like lunchclub.com and jump on a call with someone with completely different interests than you.

Tip #2: Create content and put yourself out there to increase your chances of bumping into things you don’t know 🎬

This one was very challenging for me at first, especially as an introvert.

But I had to start somewhere. One of the main reasons I joined the Ship30for30 program was to put systems in place that simplifies the process of content creation for me.

These systems along with the Ship30for30 community have empowered me to create content and put myself out there. This will eventually open up opportunities that I am unaware of today.
