Take Regular Walks to Build Structure Into Your Workdays and Live a Healthy Life
In March 2020, I started working from home and I have been working remotely ever since!
The one thing I miss about going to the office is the structure it provided to my workdays. I would get up at 7 AM, have around an hour of personal time, then walk to the subway station at 8:30 AM, and be at the office by 9 AM. There was a dedicated lunch hour at 12 pm and I was done by 5 pm. I was back home by 6 pm when I had the rest of the day to myself for personal time.
If you’re working from home and miss the structure of the office, then read along to learn a healthy solution to this problem.
Take morning walks to simulate your commute to the office.
When I initially started working from home there was no structure to my mornings. There were no boundaries between my personal morning time and when work started.
My solution was to take a 45-minute walk before starting my workday.
These morning walks are beneficial in 3 ways:
- It separates your personal morning time from the start of your workday by simulating your commute to the office.
- It’s an opportunity to be active and avoid sitting behind your computer all day.
- It allows you to think about the topics you come across during your personal morning time and come up with creative ideas.
Lunchtime and evening walks add more structure to your day.
This lack of boundary/structure was present in my lunch hours and in the evenings as well.
The solution was again to take a short walk after lunch and in the evening when I was done at work. I sometimes take a quick bike ride after work since I always biked back home from the office. Another commute simulation!
If you prefer to hit the gym after work that’s a great idea too.
